About the boutique

Edited couture on the avenue: co-ord sets, cape sets, bandhani and hand-embroidered occasion wear, kept in small numbers. Here is what can honestly be said about it, and what only its owner can say.

What is on the rail

Co-ord sets, cape sets, gowns, kurtas, palazzos, drapes and shirts, for cocktail evenings, receptions, mehendi, sangeet nights, family functions and the ordinary days in between. The colours that come back again and again in the boutique's own photographs are a sharp chartreuse, ivory, blush pink, deep plum, emerald, rust and caramel.

Two kinds of work do most of the talking. The first is hand embroidery: sequins, beads, threadwork and floral appliqué on satin-sheen crepe and embroidered net, and gold thread worked at a shoulder, a cuff or a hem. The second is bandhani, tie-dye in small white circles, in purple, in deep red, and in a run of teal, rust, olive and pink.

Limited works, and why that matters

Bandhani is tied by hand before it is dyed, which means no two lengths finish the same. In the boutique's own pictures the pieces hang singly rather than in stacks of one design in six sizes.

The practical effect for a shopper is simple. What is on the rail this week is largely what there is, so it is worth telephoning to ask what has just come in.

Shopping by video call

The boutique's own store card carries one line above the telephone number: video call shopping available. It is the most useful thing on the card. A photograph cannot show how a drape falls or how a chartreuse reads in daylight; somebody holding the piece up and turning it can.

Telephone 000000 00000 and ask.

Where it is

22 Orchid Lane, South Kolkata, Kolkata. the avenue is one of the city's long shopping streets, so the thing to look for is the black board with the shop's name in lit gold script, in English and again in Bengali, with a hexagonal monogram at the left-hand end. Open every day, 11:30 am to 8:00 pm.

The part only the owner can write

A page like this normally opens with who started the shop, in what year, and why. None of that is published anywhere the concept site could honestly draw on, so none of it has been written here.

Everything above comes from three sources and no others: the boutique's own signboard, its own printed store card, and its own photographs. Nothing has been assumed, and no customer opinion of any kind appears anywhere on this site.

If this concept were taken further, this is the space where the owner's own account of the shop would sit.
