Ranghaat Handlooms

Hollowmere Mall, Parkside, Kolkata

A mill makes a thousand a day. A loom makes one.

We are two floors up, with a room full of handwoven cotton and silk, chosen one piece at a time.

  • Sarees in maroon, cream and printed cotton hanging together on a rail inside the shop.
  • Pink, teal and printed drapes hanging side by side above a shelf of folded cloth.
  • A blue silk blend saree draped on a display stand in the shop, with shelves of cloth behind it.

Who we are

A small room, carefully kept

Ranghaat Handlooms is a boutique on the second floor at Hollowmere Mall. What we keep is handwoven cloth: cotton and silk from looms in Bengal, Rajasthan, Telangana, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh, and shirts and kurtis printed by hand.

Every photograph on this site was taken here, on our own shelves. None of it is a catalogue picture and none of it is a stock photograph. What you see is what you can come and hold.

Handloom is made slowly and in small numbers, so much of what is here exists in ones and twos. If you have your eye on something, it is worth telling us before you make the journey.

Shelves of folded sarees in many colours inside the shop, with a blue block printed drape hanging in front.

What we keep

Cloth, and where it came from

Bengal's own looms at Fulia and Dhaniakhali. Kota from Rajasthan. Telia from Telangana. Tussar and blended silk woven in Bhagalpur. Chanderi and Maheshwari from Madhya Pradesh.

Where to start

Fifteen mulmuls, each with a name

Amber Loom. Indigo Scroll. Crimson Ember. Lilac Ink. Soft cotton mulmul in fifteen colours and prints, and each one carries a name rather than a number.

The tassels are a different colour from the body of the saree every time. That small disagreement is what makes them worth seeing together rather than one at a time.

Something worth knowing

We stitch, as well as sell

We offer blouse and garment stitching. Choose a saree here and the blouse can be made to your measurements, without you carrying the cloth somewhere else and starting the whole conversation again.

Bring anything you would like made, or send us a message first if you would rather know before you travel.

How the stitching works

  • An ochre mulmul saree block printed with small motifs and a patterned border, folded on cream cloth.
  • A deep red Kota cotton saree printed all over with small leaf motifs and a patterned border.
  • An indigo Telia cotton dupatta with a white triangle ikat pattern and fringe, on a hanger.

Worth knowing once

Why no two of these are the same

Ajrakh is stamped by hand with carved wooden blocks and taken through the dye again and again, so the colour is built up in layers. Dabu holds the dye off with mud. Telia is dyed in the yarn, before anybody has woven a single thread.

Learn that once and you will not mistake a machine-printed copy for the real thing again, at our counter or anywhere else.

The whole explanation, plainly
