Accessibility

This site is built to be read and used by everyone who arrives.

We aim at WCAG 2.2 level AA, the international standard most public bodies and courts refer to. This page says what was actually done, what we know is short of it, and how to tell us if something gets in your way.

What was done

Six things, in every page of this site.

01

Contrast that was measured, not guessed

Every text colour on this site was checked against the surface behind it before it was used. The lowest pair on the page is a small label at about six to one; body text sits above thirteen to one. The standard asks for four and a half to one on ordinary text.

02

Everything works from the keyboard

Every link, button and question opens with the keyboard alone, in the order it appears on the page, with a visible ring around whatever is focused. A skip link at the top jumps straight to the content.

03

Motion you can turn off

If your device asks for reduced motion, this site stops moving: the entrances, the scrolling frames and the surface behind the page all switch off. On a phone there is no animation library at all, so nothing is loaded that you would not use.

04

Real HTML underneath

Headings are headings, lists are lists, the questions are real disclosure elements and the navigation is a real navigation. A screen reader is given the same structure you can see.

05

Pictures that say what they are

Every photograph that carries meaning has a description written for it. Pictures that are only decoration are marked as decoration, so a screen reader passes over them instead of reading a filename aloud.

06

Text that stays put

Type is set in relative units and the layout reflows when you enlarge it. Nothing on the page moves on its own after it has loaded, so what you are reading does not jump.

Said plainly

Where this site falls short.

  • The concept sites under /work/ are copies of earlier builds, shown as they were made. They were built to the same intent, but they are not re-checked as this site is.
  • The star map in the Watch area is a decorative canvas. Everything it shows is also available as a list of links on the same page.
  • Videos are played from YouTube in its privacy-preserving player. Captions and controls are YouTube’s, not ours.

This is a statement of what we did and what we know, not a claim that the site meets any particular law. It is not legal advice. If you need a formal audit for your own business, we will say so and help you find someone who does them.

If something blocks you

Tell us, and we will fix it.

Write or send a message with the page you were on and what happened. You do not need technical words: “the text was too small to read on my phone” is a perfectly good report. We will reply, and where the problem is ours we will fix it and tell you when it is done.

The same goes for the sites we build for clients: accessibility and speed are checked on a phone before anything goes live, and it is part of the work, not an extra.
